Part the first:

OMG, I’m updating this thing on my laptop. WHEW. I hate typing on my phone.

Won’t do this every time, because hotspot is slow, but it’s nice to do it this time.

Part the second:

Wow. I got three spam pingbacks. I truly have arrived!

I don’t allow comments here, obviously, and pingbacks are a different critter which shows up in the same area as the comments usually. But basically anything someone might try to add to this site, I have to approve it first, and I haven’t, sooooo.

Part the third:

It’s St. Andrew’s Day! He doesn’t have a hilariously coincidental story (scroll down the post) like St. Mungo does, but he’s the patron saint of Scotland, and I’m guessing his holiday there has an importance near to that of Independence Day here. NO I AM NOT MAKING FUN OF THE INDY MOVEMENT. PLEASE DO NOT THROW ROTTEN HAGGIS AT ME. Ew. But we don’t have an equivalent holiday to this on our federal calendar. Frankly, Christmas is not supposed to be on the federal calendar, as it is. First Amendment violation. But it would be politically unpopular to remove it. So much for the Constitution.

(I’m not saying ban Christmas. I’m saying don’t keep it as a federal holiday. Not everyone gets a paid day off then anyway so I don’t see the point in the first place.)

ANYWAY, here is a St. Andrew’s Day photo for you. Don’t ever say I never do anything for you people.

Gotta go. I think I’ve let dinner sit too long and Dad will be annoyed. I was taking care of some other shit and I thought to pop in here. Hi! Later!

Finally got around to using my external hard drive setup. With Amazon’s prices and only needing Blu-Ray for my Region 1 DVDs (Game of Thrones, basically), it was cheap to get a second external that wasn’t for Blu-Ray, so I didn’t have to convert my laptop’s player to Region 2 after all.

Anyway, I’m finally getting around to watching The Book Group properly, not the Kenny excerpts on YouTube or the borderline clusterfuck on Tubi. With subtitles, even! I highly recommend the experience, especially to other Americans like me who might have trouble with Scottish accents sometimes. You get to hear how to actually pronounce Buchaille Etive Mor, too. (Which, hilariously enough for us fans of a certain book series, translates as The Great Shepherd!)

Even better: The VLC app will play Region 2 on an American computer with zero problems. It does not play nicely with Blu-Ray without going through configurations most of us don’t have the background or patience to deal with, but regions are easy. JUST REMEMBER that whatever DVD drive you have will only play a foreign region a limited number of times — five, I believe, but please double-check — before becoming stuck on playing that region only, forever. It’s hardwired that way. So trust me. Use an external. They’re maybe $20 to $30 USD at most.

If you’re in a better TV-viewing situation than I am and can just use a normal DVD player (Dad doesn’t own one, a status quo I’m considering changing), get a universal. My above advice is just for folks who want to watch on a laptop or other drive-supporting computer. Especially useful for fans who want to make their own Rory screencaps.

(If you can’t afford Paint Shop Pro or a Photoshop subscription, I recommend GIMP — which is free — so you have somewhere to paste and save your caps.)

(I should do a separate post on this. Maybe sometime.)

ANYWAY. With the DVDs of the show I can now see what Dirka and Fist were talking about with husband and boyfriend respectively, get a working idea of the general conversation even when accents are thick, etc. You get more out of the show this way. Love it.

I’m still considering redoing all the screencaps I did for this show. I definitely need to redo what I managed for series 2, which I had never finished anyway. I’ll experiment and see if taking them on my new laptop looks better and decide about series 1 from there.

I will work out a way to share the raw shots with all of you, too. If my hosting service doesn’t have a photo album app available for install then, I guess, Google Drive it may be. We’ll see. No promises either way as to timeline.

(Have you looked for that small but major update I mentioned two posts ago? No? You’ll want to do that, I think.)

I got some news the other day that expands my options for obtaining internet service. Even if that doesn’t work out I will likely subscribe to something anyway. I thought my data allotment on my phone service was sufficient but probably not. Also, for all my complaining about satellite internet, Dad’s TV reception is really good except possibly during hurricane season… and I will not be overly concerned about internet if we’re in a major fucking storm. Sooooo…

Okay. Shit to do and I’ll just bet I’m boring y’all. Later, gators.

More on DCI Daley

A major Scottish paper has now reported on Rory’s new show here. I am mostly sharing it as a kind of bookmark for myself as it’s ideal for the Articles section here.

I had a thought the other day, too. There’s potential for a love scene or three; Jim Daley is a married man, if often unhappily. Wonder what Rory will think of that. For all that he used to say it was brilliant (his exact word) to get paid to hang around in bed with beautiful women, I’ve seen some of his on-camera romantic interludes. My dude is a shy boy. ❤ Could be they’ll give those a miss — they weren’t detailed in the first book and I have no reason to believe Meyrick changed his approach to love scenes later — but we’ll see, won’t we?

(We will not discuss what my reaction to a Jim Daley love scene might or might not be after what I went through screencapping The Crew, and I don’t mean THAT scene, either.)

Good times. Okay. Gotta go. Stuff to do.

And now for an actual admin update. As always, I don’t mean to make the whole site about me, but it might be useful to someone, in theory, if I keep you all apprised on the behind-the-scenes, so to speak.

Just uploaded another pic to the header. Yes, as in singular. I haven’t done anything to get at-home internet yet. I am not yet certain I can justify the expense. If I need to get my laptop online, I can hotspot through my phone. I don’t think I’ll feel comfortable looking for any sort of regular internet-access solution until I’m earning what I consider a comfortable amount of money. My threshold for that is not very high, I don’t have to win the Powerball or anything, but I need to go higher than I am right now.

So it’ll likely be an approach like uploading one pic to the header per day, and that only when I remember to. I’m sure you are all heartbroken 🙄 but we’ll manage.

It’s pretty difficult to juggle what else I want to do with the site as well when I can’t just jump on it any time I think about it. So stuff will get improved but the pace will likely be glacial. If you thought it was glacial before, Just You Wait.

So I’m glad I didn’t wholesale give up the blogging. I can at least broadcast when something interesting’s known to be going on with Rory. Like I’ve said probably a million times, I can’t scoop (jump on a new news story early or immediately), but I can chronicle, so that’s what I’mmagonna do. Nyeh.

I’ve tinkered here and there, though. Just in a couple spots. If you dig around enough you’ll find what changed. Such a small detail. Such a big change. Hmmmm.

Nope. No hints. Just go look. There you go.

‘Later, ‘gators. Can’t say when, hopefully soon.

Okay. Back story. When I had the Facebook page, one of my regular commenters mentioned a DCI Daley book series whose author wanted Rory McCann to be his star character if the books were ever optioned for TV.

I had no fuckin’ idea who DCI Daley was, so I exercised my Google Fu. Found the author, Denzil Meyrick, on Facebook and he’d written two or three posts about it, easily found because he illustrated them with Rory photos.

What seems to have happened was the magic of social media (and one reason I never abandon it entirely): he was having a conversation with his fans about who should play Daley, he came back with Rory as an answer, and it turned out someone in the comments either knew Rory or had contacts who did. Meyrick asked them to pass along his email address.

Next thing you know, Rory’s reading the books (of course ❤) and emails Meyrick saying he’d love to take the role.

But that was some years back, and by the time I heard about all this, there really wasn’t any talk about it anymore, at least not out in the open.

Until today, when I saw my phone notifications.

[bounces around like a little kid on candy]

Proud of ya, big man! I know you don’t know me from Eve. That’s okay. (Sort of.) I just know this was something you wanted. YEAH!!!

…Of course, I won’t be able to see it for a good while. Sniff. 🥺

P.S. I’ve read Whiskey in Small Glasses. Been saying I need to start on the rest. Now I really do!
